Howard Zinn

Howard Zinn, a historian whose "People's History of the United States" resurrected neglected stories of the country's past, becoming a surprise best-seller in the 1980s and beyond, died Wednesday of an apparent heart attack in a swimming pool in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 87.

First published in 1980 with a print run of just 5,000 copies, the book sold more than 2 million copies, including condensations such as "The 20th Century" and "A Young People's History of the United States."

In writing about the economics of the slave trade, the impact of robber barons on ordinary people, the violence against the labor movement and the long struggles of the women's movement, Zinn provided an alternative to the then-dominant "dead white male" version of history.

The approach resonated with readers, who by word of mouth drove it to best-seller status.

Zinn, who had taught at Boston University since 1964, focused "not on the achievements of the heroes of traditional history, but on all those people who were the victims of those achievements, who suffered silently or fought back magnificently," as he said in the preface to one edition.

"His writings have changed the consciousness of a generation and helped open new paths to understanding and its crucial meaning for our lives," Noam Chomsky, the left-wing activist and MIT professor, wrote of his friend.

Zinn's best-known book became a text in high schools and colleges and was endorsed by actor Matt Damon, a former neighbor, in the Academy Award-winning film "Good Will Hunting."

But it was not universally appreciated. Historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr., generally considered a liberal, called Zinn a polemicist rather than a scholar.

Other critics, while acknowledging his originality, said Zinn was both too left-wing in his view of history and too selective within the left, leaving religious and technological thinkers out of his synthesis.

What To Do If The Storm Comes?

Tuesday afternoon around 12:45p.m. the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the South Los Angeles, Long Beach and Orange County areas. The warning expired just 3 hours later, but not before the tornado touched down in several coastal cities.

If a tornado warning is issued again:

* Listen to local weather stations (or, if the Internet is working, check local websites)

* Listen for a loud roar similar to a freight train

If a tornado occurs go to a safe area:

* The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement. Of course, this isn’t an option for most Long Beach residents.
* In the absence of a basement, take shelter in a reinforced building. Head to the lowest level near the center of the building and go into an interior hallway or room such as a closet. Use a blanket or pillow to cover your body and stay away from any windows.
* If you are in a car or mobile home, leave and go to a nearby building for cover. Never try to outrun a tornado in your car! It is one of the most dangerous places to be during any type of strong wind storm.
* If no cover is available, lie flat on the ground in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head. This method is the least safe and should only be used as a last resort when no other substantial shelter is available.

A Great Memorial Day of “Martin Luther King Jr. Day”

This morning I glance news in google trends while is touched by a hot topic named “Martin Luther King Jr. Day”. Even though I’m not a student at school any more, a learner I will be in society for whole life. Here is the article I read.

About 200 Saratoga High School students are expected to take part in a community service day on Jan. 18 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Students will gather in the school's quad at 11 a.m. on the holiday and choose to plant flowers to help beautify the school, participate in a school-wide cleanup effort or help prepare meals to be distributed to the San Jose Family Shelter.

The organization set up a Facebook account to try and reach as many students as possible in this world of ever-changing technological communication. About 78 students stated on the page that they'd be attending the event, said Albert, who joins parent volunteer Sudha Sreenivasan as the co-chairwomen of the event.

Students who choose to spend the day cooking will prepare pasta, vegetables and brownies. The meals will be delivered that day to the shelter.
"We could spend a month on beautifying the school, but we only have the one day," she said. The students and PTSO volunteers will do their best with limited time and limited funds, she said.

This day is a day that a great man died, but is a day hopes appear and going on. It’s a significant time. And I think students and People can even do such things beyond Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
